Horsham lies 300 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 450 kilometres south east of Adelaide, on the main rail and road routes linking Victoria with Adelaide.

The Western Highway is the main artery through Horsham connecting Melbourne and Ballarat in the south-east and Adelaide in the north-west. There is also the Wimmera Highway which connects St Arnaud to the east, Naracoorte in the west and the Henty Highway connecting the south-western areas of Victoria such as Hamilton, Warrnambool and Portland, along with Warracknabeal and Mildura in the north.

Horsham is a lively city, centrally located in the Wimmera region, with excellent opportunities for shopping, dining, entertainment and accommodation. With its vibrant community and well kept streets, parks and river, it was declared Australia's Tidiest Town in 2001, and has been a runner up many times. You can enjoy the beautiful Botanic Gardens, designed by Guilfoyle, who laid out Melbourne's Botanic Gardens, and stroll amongst the ancient red gums lining the Wimmera River, running through the centre of town. This is a favourite spot for rowing, kayaking and canoeing, with picnic and BBQ areas. Horsham offers a superb base for exploring a region that offers scenic bushland, mountains and waterways. Wartook Valley and the Grampians are a picturesque short drive away, and the world mecca of rock climbing, Mount Arapiles, and the somewhat bohemian town of Natimuk are even closer, worth seeing for the wildflowers and dramatic scenery. Visit the picturesque spot where the Wimmera River flood plain meets The Little Desert, near Dimboola. Whatever you choose to do, you are assured a warm welcome in Horsham!

The Wimmera

When staying at Mercure Horsham, the beauty and mystery of the Grampians is on your doorstep. Best explored by foot, there are more than 160 kilometres of walking tracks ranging from short, easy walks, day long and overnight challenging expeditions.

The area is also rich in European pioneering history. Explore Troopers Creek in Roses Gap, Zumsteins in Wartook and Brim Springs in Brimpaen or why not explore Gulgurn Manja Shelter and Ngamadjidj Shelter in the Northern Grampians and to the west Billimina Shelter Loop and Manja Shelter.

Popular shorts walks within an one hour return include picturesque MacKenzie Falls. An excellent walk for wildflowers is Beehive Falls. One of the most photographed spots in the Grampians is The Balconies, and the panoramic views of the Wimmera plains from Mount Zero are spectacular.

For rugged rocky outcrops and magnificent views of the ranges explore Golton Gorge or Hollow Mountain walk. Both are an approximate two hour return trip.

For the more adventurous walkers try Mount Stapylton for the climb over Flat Rock and pass through the Amphitheatre. Briggs Bluff walk explores impressive cliffs and wind scoured caverns; and Asses Ears Mountain Range walk. All are approximately three hour return hikes.

Wildflowers are best seen during late winter through to summer. Wartook Valley is one of Australia's richest flora areas with over one thousand species - twenty of which are found nowhere else in the world.

The Grampians is also home to over 200 bird species and over 40 species of mammal have been recorded in the park including possums, echidnas, wallabies and kangaroos. Plus emus, lizards, deer and skinks- there's so much more!
